There was a time Alberta was a Wild West frontier and truth be told there are still more cattle than people here. On a working ranch, visitors can leave their worries behind, meet colourful locals, slip into the saddle and experience the cowboy lifestyle.

Lucasia Ranch – Established in 1881 in the picturesque Porcupine Hills of southwestern Alberta, this family-run ranch has 4,000 acres to explore. Visitors can herd cattle with the ranch hands, ride horses, help the Lucas family with ranch chores, learn to rope, go hiking, watch birds and wildlife or just relax around a crackling fire.

Sierra West – Beautiful vistas and rolling ridges are a pleasure to explore on horseback at this ranch near Lundbreck. Guests can go for a leisurely ride, explore the high country, have a riding lesson or join an old-fashioned cattle drive. Overnight stays are in private cabins.
Rocking R Guest Ranch – Visitors get their own little piece of the range with a private cabin rental just outside Calgary. The cozy cabins have views of Eagle Lake and the Canadian Rockies and if you want to do more than just relax, there are hay rides, sleigh rides and equestrian activities on the ranch.

Bar Diamond Guest Ranch – The nearest city is a five-day ride on a good horse and with 34,000 acres of land, the nearest neighbour isn’t much closer. Situated on the Red Deer River about 90 minutes north of Medicine Hat, there are birds and wildlife as well as horses and cattle on the ranch.
